From The Nassau Guardian:

Equality Bahamas Executive Director Alicia Wallace yesterday decried the Davis administration’s handling of the royal visit, raising particular concern over a warning from Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) Commissioner of Police Shanta Knowles, who said the police would respond to any negative “distractions” from the visit, as she noted she was unaware of any plans for protests.

Knowles said she believed the visit would be “free of controversy of any kind,” as she called on Bahamians to “show the world we know how to behave and live in unity”.

Her comments came as members of the Rastafarian community and the Bahamas National Reparations Committee organized protests to demand reparations for slavery, as they have on previous royal visits.

Wallace said the situation is particularly ironic given the Progressive Liberal Party’s (PLP’s) history as the party that ushered in majority rule.

“At Equality Bahamas, we’re making the connections between the issues that we’ve been working on for the last 12 years, colonization and slavery, and reparations that would help us to chart the path toward equality and a world of justice and liberation,” she said.

“It’s quite interesting to see that this is a PLP-led administration that is welcoming the colonizer here when it’s a party that loves to campaign on the fact that they championed the move for independence, that they led in the push for majority rule.

“It doesn’t add up that the same party is leading this administration right now and is silent while the commissioner of police encourages the people to ‘behave.’
