From The Tribune:
Alicia Wallace, director of Equality Bahamas, said given the degree of gender-based violence in The Bahamas, it is “ridiculous and inhumane to expect women or children to suffer through unwanted pregnancies”.
“There is absolutely no reason to criminalise a child or the people who helped her to access critical healthcare that likely saved her life, preventing further physical and mental harm,” she said on Wednesday.
“Survivors ought not suffer additional trauma caused by the action or inaction of the government that fails to prevent violence against them.”

From The Tribune:
A Member of Parliament was accused of physical and sexual violence as well as alleged threats of death more than three months ago, and there is no action resulting from the slow investigation. The accused Member of Parliament continues to hold his position, and has not been pressured by the Prime Minister or any parliamentarian to remove himself from parliament.
“In my opinion this is a clear disregard and lack of respect and care, by this administration, for survivors of sexual violence and other forms of intimate partner violence. It has no concern for the woman who went to great lengths to report to the police and later to the media. Its inaction appears to be support for abuse of power, whether perceived or realized, by the Member of Parliament,” said Alicia Wallace, director of Equality Bahamas. “Based on the way the government mishandled this case, it should be no surprise that the government attempted to dupe civil society with its complete reversal on the Gender-Based Violence bill, replacing it with another bill while pretending it is meant to have the same effect.”

hamas Alicia Wallace is refuting the prime minister’s statement that opposition toward the Protection Against Violence Bill 2023, came at the last hour.
She says Equality Bahamas participated often and provided feedback during consultations.
Wallace says it’s actually the consultations themselves being last-minute, as well as no access to the most recent drafts of bills that cause the issue.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Alicia Wallace, Director of Equality Bahamas, explains the danger of the language changes that have been placed in the Protection Against Violence Bill 2023.
She calls the new bill a “rollback” of the 2016 draft of the Gender-based Violence Bill and says we must be wary of simply “ticking boxes” when it comes to equality issues.

The prime minister recently expressed disappointment over what he felt was last-minute opposition to the new bill.
However, Wallace says the pushback has been ongoing, and shares part of the issue is the style of consultations.

From The Tribune:
THIS week sees the celebration of International Women’s Day – an opportunity to both celebrate women and, more pointedly, to continue removing barriers that hinder women.
On Saturday, members of Equality Bahamas and supporters held a march, speaking out over gender justice and climate justice. It was followed by an expo at the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts on a variety of topics.
Women’s rights were very much at the forefront of the event – and so it is timely indeed that a senior US official has spoken out on the matter too.
EDITORIAL: Honour women with equal rights (The Tribune)
US Chargé d’Affaires Usha Pitts spoke at an event held by the International Black Women’s Public Policy Institute in Freeport – and she urged Bahamian women not to wait around for men to grant them equal rights under the constitution or outlaw marital rape.
She declared: “The fact is that nothing changes for women until we take political power.”
She noted the number of women elected in the last election – seven – but equally noted they were outnumbered four to one by men.
She said: “It showed that little by little Bahamian women are starting to take the political power they deserve. And that word is very important because no one gives political power, you got to take it.”
